Elizabeth Pell
Elizabeth
Malden, MA

I live in Malden, next to the Middlesex Fells Reservation land so I can ride out my front door into the woods or during the winter go for a hike in the snow.

My bikes - Mountain ride is a Gary Fisher Hi Fi Deluxe, boy's bike. Road ride is a Merlin Fortius that my husband gave me in lieu of an engagement ring.  He said, "Elizabeth this bike is titanium and titanium lasts forever.  That's how long I want to be with you."

Why you ride – I love exercise, moving my body through space. I’ve always been a mover.  Trampoline, swimming, ballet, softball, runner, yogini, biker.  I’ve ridden a bike since I could walk but it turned to a serious passion when I had to give up running.  Appreciate the speed of road riding and checking out mentally to take in views.  And the power and skill and mental be-here-now-or-crash intensity of mountain biking.

Win any cool awards? Not for biking.  But I have been honored with photographic awards and art prizes.

Notable non-bike racing experiences: Notable - None that I can recall. Although anytime I beat my husband over some tough terrain or up a hill I revel in it.

How do you fuel your riding/racing? Nuts and dried cranberries during a ride. A great cup of java immediately after.

When not riding/racing, what do you like to eat best? Any kind of fruit, oatmeal-pecan-coconut cookies from Hi-Rise bakery.  Homemade soup and bread.  Pie. Anything someone else has made from scratch!

Favorite places to ride: So many favorites, depends on the day, mood. Around Boston on road bike I never tire of the country roads around Carlisle and Concord -- beautiful fields, horse farms, rivers and wetlands, and cranberry bogs.  For mountain biking my new favorite is on Cape Cod; it’s like riding roller coasters.

What's to like about being a LUNA Chick? I'm a brand new LUNA Chix and what attracted me is the mission of encouraging women to be healthy, offering them venues to experiment with sport, and fighting breast cancer through the Breast Cancer Fund.  Last year the Boston LUNA Chix held weekly mountain biking practice your technique rides.  I went every week and with their tips and encouragement, I went from an unsure beginner to intermediate.

Interesting fact about Elizabeth: I love rusted metal and try to take a week every year to weld and blacksmith and surprise myself making something.
